Embracing Our New Identity

One night right before Christmas, my family and I were on our way to a fun, festive concert. We'd been doing an Advent study through video and this particular night's topic was on identity.

My attention was instantly sparked at some things the teacher pointed out about our identity in Christ. While many things he mentioned were valuable, God spoke to me greatly on the way home that night.

Our identity is no joke, can you imagine that getting stolen?!

My good friend, Google, says that identity is "the fact of being who or what a person or thing is."

In this world, it is so so easy to get confused as to what our identity should be grounded in.

Billboards, ads, emails, movies, and commercials so often scream out opposing opinions of who we are. Most of the time, all these things are lies.

As young people, having a firm understanding in our identity is so vital. I know I've struggled with understanding what my identity really is, and I want to share with you guys the truths that God gave me one winter night about my true identity.

When we are/were washed in the blood of Jesus, we take on a new identity. That new identity is Jesus!

Just like our mom and other family member's blood is in us, Jesus' blood pumps through our veins when we accept that new identity that He has so graciously given us through salvation.

Jesus knew absolutely no sin. Once we've been washed in His blood, our sins are no longer apart of our identity.

Just like in Exodus 12:23, there is blood over us which God sees and delights in!

Here are 3 things that are important to remember as we discover our true identity:

1. You are a new creation!

The old has passed away, don't dwell in the past. Move on to the bright future that God has offered you.

2. Jesus' blood covers us and consumes the punishment of all sin.

We should never take advantage of that Grace. But we are covered for eternity from the punishment we deserve. It is so intriguing to me that when God looks at us, He doesn't see me. He sees Jesus. The shadow of the cross lays over us and the blood of Jesus consumes us so that we are no longer condemned, but redeemed with His death and resurrection.

3. Don't be ashamed of that identity.

Romans tells us to not be ashamed of the Gospel! Don't hide the beautiful gift that you've been given.

Now it's your turn! Hit up the comments and let's change the world.

What are some lies that you have believed about your identity?

Has the world ever changed the way you view your identity?

What are some other truths which can help us embrace our identity?

  1. I would say that I struggle the most with my appearance. My family tries to have a more conservative style dress but often I feel like so many people look down on me because of it. I often let it get to me and don't always handle it with the best attitude. I tend to feel that my identity is found in what others think of me instead of how I look to Christ. It's so easy to forget that my identity is in Jesus and that I am complete and beautiful to Him. And that's all that matters!!

    1. Thank you so much for your insights, girl! I know completely what you're talking about.

Crazy story... I was really struggling last summer when my fam would go to public pools and I was wearing my shorts and swim shirt haha. I asked God to help me not feel that way, and funny thing was, we were leaving the pool that day and I heard two girls around 16-ish talking about a girl who was "so beautiful." I started looking around and then they told me, "Oh my gosh, you're so gorgeous."

And I'm NOT trying to promote myself in saying that, but when I am pale from not enough sunshine, bare faced, crazy pool hair, and in a swimsuit... I don't feel too pretty. I want to give the glory to God because our beauty doesn't come from what we look like or what we are wearing, but from our inner appearance.

I've been thinking a lot about our souls. God doesn't look at the outward appearance or what we do on the outside, but what our souls look like. When we keep that right, we will be the most radiantly beautiful possible!

That's my two cents... Thank you dear, for all your wonderful, encouraging, truthful words! Check out the song, You First by Riley Clemmons. Such a good one for this topic! :)

  2. Lol girl! You are gorgeous!!! I think anyone would say that!

I really do like You First! Two songs that really encourage me when I start to worry too much about what others think are You Say by Lauren Daigle and I Shall Not Want by Audrey Assad. Incredible songs!!!

  3. Hey there, Brookie! Great post!! This is super important for us in this world, it's as if identity is the least defined thing in this culture. Before I say anything else is who I am or what I am, I need to remember that my most real and precious identity is in being a daughter of the King. :)

    1. Hey, girl! Isn't it? That is so completely true.

And, thanks about the pic! Are you talking about the one on the main page or the one in the header? Because, the one in the header isn't me ;) If you're talking about the main one, photo creds go to the amazing you!
