In The Word: Church Notes

Isn't church wonderful? Recently, my family found it necessary to just let God lead us where He wanted us to go. Has it been easy, absolutely not! But it has been so totally beautiful to see how God is bringing us closer together as a family and as children of God. Sometimes, we have to just let everything go and believe deep down that He's carrying us. If we do that, everything will eventually fall into place.

When nothing else seems to be going right, God always is.

Anyways, as we've been visiting some new churches, we've landed at a wonderful place of worship the last few weeks. I've so enjoyed our time there of praise and honest truths from God's Word.

This week, for our In The Word series post, I decided to share with you guys some of my sermon notes from this Sunday. If you close your eyes, you might just be able to imagine yourself sitting next to me in some stackable chairs worshipping Jesus. ;)

The pastor taught from Hebrews.

I don't know about you, but when I hear that the preaching is gonna be on Hebrews 1:2-4, I'm going to be a little tiny bit skeptical. If you've ever read Hebrews, you'll know that it's an incredibly rich, honest, jam-packed book full of some deeply theological truths. I'm not skeptical because I don't trust every word God's given me, but because I am anticipating what specific points will be drawn out of it. I was pleasantly surprised at what God revealed to me through just the few simple verses in Hebrews 1:2-4.

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in

these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things,

through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact

imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making

purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as

much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

[Hebrews 1:2-4]

First of all, how lovely are the writings in Hebrew?!

[v. 1]

"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets..."

-Ages ago, God spoke through the prophets. He still speaks through us today, so we are still to listen to His voice and share the things He's told us.

[v. 2]

"but in these last days, He has spoken to us through His Son. Whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world."

-Jesus is now the One who God reveals His immeasurable truths of who He is through

-If we see that we are simply stewards of this world and that Jesus is the true owner of what we have, we will be humbled and have a new perspective on life.

[v. 3]

"He is the radiance..."

-It is so amazingly indescribable how God has made His Son in many ways, similar to the sun. The sun is so far away from us, yet we can't live without it. It is so powerful, that it can destroy us, yet we survive on it. In many other ways that I can't describe in my small words, the Son is like the sun. Look it up sometime, God's pretty incredible. ;)

"Exact imprint of His nature..."

-Quite simply said, He is God.

"Upholds the world in His power..."

-We don't have to keep our world together because He's already holding it. What a comfort, right?!

"Making purification for our sins..."

-He cleanses us from all sin. That gives me such overwhelming peace.

Church notes:

From this simple passage that I know I've passed many times, God reveals so much about His Son.

J E S U S:

Speaks for God

Owns the earth

Has the radiance of God

He has the exact likeness of God

He has power over the universe

He cleanses us from our sins

Holds us

Sits at the most worthy spot- [right hand of God]

I S   L O R D

So many things try to take the place of God, and of Jesus, in our lives. Things like consumerism, humanism, intellectualism, racism, sexism, liberalism, conservativism, materialism, socialism, and so much more. These things should never be lord in our life.

Jesus Is Lord!

The only thing that is worthy, was worthy, and will ever be worthy in our lives is Jesus.

A P P L I C A T I O N:

Okay, world-changers, here's a little application that will transform your life.

1. Boldly proclaim that Jesus is Lord. Not only of your life, but of all things and all lives.

2. If you are a follower of Jesus, you are a disciple. A disciple is someone who is always pressing toward the likeness of Jesus with obedience.

Jesus doesn't want to be a part of your life, He wants to be

L O R D  of your life.

Now, it's your turn! Hit up the comments with some of these conversation starters!

What is a book/passage in the Bible that you may look over, but have found that it has some profound truths in it?

What usually becomes Lord of your life if you don't let Jesus take the top?

How are you living out your role of "disciple?"
